DPI to showcase NSW research and development at Irrigation Australia International Conference

25 May 2016

Irrigation experts from the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) will showcase water and irrigation research and development at the Irrigation Australia International Conference held in Melbourne on 24-26 May 2016.

NSW DPI Director of Water and Irrigation, Dr Tracey MacDonald, said DPI officers conducted a variety of research to help improve productivity and sustainability.

“NSW DPI conducts a range of water and irrigation research to improve water productivity and sustainability for the State’s primary industries, with dedicated research, technical and development officers working across rice, cotton, grains, pasture and horticulture,” Dr MacDonald said.

“NSW DPI also delivers the NSW State Priority Project - Sustaining the Basin: Irrigated Farm Modernisation (STBIFM) - that improves the long term sustainability of regional communities by assisting irrigators to adapt to reduced water availability and update irrigation infrastructure in the NSW Border Rivers, Gwydir, Namoi/Peel, Macquarie/Cudgegong and NSW Barwon Darling water management areas.”

Research presented by NSW DPI will include:

  • High yielding irrigated cereal and canola production.
  • Smarter Irrigation for Profit.
  • The effect of pressurised irrigation technologies on the life-cycle climate change impact of crops.
  • Review of current irrigation technologies in the Australian vegetable industry.
  • Can I treat my on-farm storm water and re-use it safely on a high value crop?
  • Sustaining the Basin: Irrigated Farm Modernisation - early adoption of NSW interim water meter standards.
  • Sustaining the Basin: Irrigated Farm Modernisation – for improved water use efficiency.
  • Sustaining the Basin: Irrigated Farm Modernisation - changes in farm productivity in the Macquarie Valley.
  • IrriSAT Technology - an irrigation scheduling and crop data benchmark tool.

NSW DPI is a proud sponsor of the 2016 Irrigation Australia International Conference. This year’s Conference will have around 1365 Trade Visitors attend the show, with over 330 delegates already registered.

The STBIFM program is funded through the Australian Government's Sustainable Rural Water Use and Infrastructure programme as part of the Murray Darling Basin Plan recovery strategy.
