DPI assisting farmers affected by floods

4 Apr 2017

NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) is working with Local Land Services to support the NSW State Emergency Services (SES) in the Ballina, Byron, Kyogle, Lismore, Richmond Valley and Tweed local government areas.

NSW DPI State Emergency Coordinator, Simon Oliver said the NSW Government is providing emergency assistance to north coast primary producers following significant flooding from ex-tropical Cyclone Debbie.

“We are currently coordinating animal welfare relief services for livestock and companion animals,” said Mr Oliver.

“There are significant numbers of stranded stock and calls for assistance are increasing as access to areas improves.”

“We will continue to assess the impact to livestock, crops and farm infrastructure however at this stage, it is too early to obtain an accurate assessment of damage.”

A Local Control Centre has been set up in Wollongbar and a State Coordination Centre has also been set up in Orange. This will assist with allocating staff and resources as well as assessing the level of impact and damage.

Primary Producers requiring assistance with emergency support, lost or found livestock, stranded livestock, emergency fodder, flood related agricultural issues and reporting deceased livestock are encouraged to contact their Local Land Services on 1300 795 299.
