First Creative Writing Competition for Solitary Islands Marine Park

24 May 2017

Students from the Coffs Coast and Clarence Valley are invited to enter the first Solitary Islands Marine Park Creative Writing Competition.

Solitary Islands Marine Park Acting Manager, Dr Heath Folpp, said the park is the state’s oldest marine park and is s an area of high species diversity where tropical, sub-tropical and temperate species co-exist.

“We are looking to the up and coming custodians of our marine environment to tell us what they think is important about the Solitary Islands Marine Park and this year we are running a fun competition to look into the future of our marine environment” saidDr Folpp.

“The SIMPly Creative Writing Competition asks students to write to themselves in the year 2067, 50 years into the future, discussing their hopes and dreams for the Solitary Islands Marine Park and what they hope it will look like.

“We encourage students to research a current issue affecting the marine environment and explain to their future selves what they are currently doing in 2017 to help combat it.

“As part of the Solitary Islands Marine Park education program we encourage students to take an active role in marine education in their community, we are asking teachers to give their students the opportunity to share their letters where possible.”

A key feature of the marine park is the five Solitary Islands that are dotted along the coastline of the marine park.

To reward students for their efforts, the winner of each category (K-2, 3-4 and 5-6) will receive a $50 book voucher for themselves and a $50 book voucher for their schools library.

The competition closes on the 31st of May with winners announced on World Oceans Day the 8th of June 2017.
