HAMMOND, Jeffrey

Background

Jef is the Director of Science & Research and the Director of EMAI, the NSW Department of Primary Industries’ (DPI) Centre of Excellence for Plant and Animal Health. He is a world renowned biosecurity expert with some 35 years’ international experience, an authority on foot and mouth disease (FMD).

Much of his research career has been spent on the prevention and control of animal diseases, including the development of vaccines and diagnostics for FMD, swine fevers and influenza. From 2008 to 2013 Dr Hammond was the head of the World Reference Laboratory for FMD based at the Pirbright Institute in the United Kingdom. He was the Leader of terrestrial animal diagnsostics and animal diseases at CSIRO from 2000 to 2008.
