Background

Joanne Holloway is the research entomologist for field crops in southern NSW. She is also the leader of the Stored Grain Research Unit at Wagga Wagga.

After completion of her PhD, studying the ecophysiology of sugar gliders, Joanne was employed as a Professional Officer at the University of NSW. Research during this time involved investigating adaptations of a wide range of native animals, from red kangaroos to Christmas Island crabs, to the environment.

Joanne joined NSW Agriculture (now NSW DPI) at Wagga Wagga Agricultural Institute in 2002 as a Research Entomologist. Since then her research has focussed on the identification and management strategies to avoid chemical resistance in stored grain insects, and integrated pest management of insects in broadacre field crops.

Qualifications

  • B.Sc. (Hons.) – University of New England 1992
  • PhD Zoology – University of New England 1999

Current projects

  • National program for monitoring resistance to phosphine in insect pests of stored grain
  • New knowledge to improve the timing of pest management decisions in grain crops
  • Metarhizium as a potential seed treatment to control insect pests of vegetables and crops
