Background

Joop van Leur is a plant pathologist working on control of pulse diseases, mainly through improvement of resistance.

He joined NSW Agriculture in 1997. After graduating from the Agricultural University of Wageningen, he joined this university as a research scientist for three years. After that he worked for 15 years with the International Centre for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), first as a barley pathologist based at Aleppo, Syria, and for the last three years as a barley pathologist / breeder and project leader with the Ethiopian National Program in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

His current work deals mainly with the evaluation of germplasm of a range of crops (faba bean, chickpea, field pea lentil and canola) for resistance to diseases and viruses that are of importance in the northern grain zone and the development of sustainable and economically viable disease management packages. He is involved in a number of national and international projects dealing with pulse pathology.

Current projects

  • Development of high yielding faba bean varieties with resistance to rust, chocolate sport and Bean leafroll virus.
  • Quantification of disease and virus tolerance in advanced faba bean, chickpea, field pea and lentil breeding lines.
  • Selection of pea breeding lines with immunity to Pea seedborne mosaic virus.
  • Identification and utilisation of virus resistance in chickpea and lentil germplasm (collaborative project with ICARDA, Syria).
  • Quantification of virus resistance in canola germplasm.
