SPOHR, Lorraine

Biometrician

Research interests

  • Developing relevant statistical education courses for scientists.
  • Pseudoreplication in postharvest research.
  • Analysis of postharvest and greenhouse horticulture experimental data.

Background

Lorraine Spohr is located at the Gosford Primary Industries Institute where she provides consultant biometrical support to local researchers and extension officers. Lorraine joined NSW DPI in 1983 as a biometrician at Wagga Wagga before transferring to Gosford in 1985. Lorraine’s general consultancy work ranges from designing experiments, analysing data (using ASReml, GenStat or R) to teaching the basic statistics course and designing surveys. She has been a key member of the GPII entomology team studying the ecology and detection of the bluetongue-virus vector Culicoides brevitarsis and particularly in the modelling of arbovirus-vector distribution and spread throughout NSW.

Lorraine’s collaboration with scientists from many disciplines has lead to co-authorships of over 30 peer-reviewed scientific papers and publications. Since 2003 Lorraine has been a member of the team of biometricians responsible for the development of a basic statistics course for NSW DPI. This course has now been successfully presented many times throughout NSW as well as attracting interest from outside agencies.
