  • Marine Parks – influence of zoning schemes (management) on different species
  • Ecology of saltwater and freshwater fish

Background

Paul Butcher is a Research Scientist with the Fisheries Conservation Technology Unit based in Coffs Harbour. The unit develops and tests commercial and recreational fishing gear to improve selectivity and reduce unwanted catches; develops by-catch reduction devices; assesses recreational fish hook mortality; estimates impacts of fishing gear on the selectivity and mortality of key species and provides management advice on fishing gear regulations.

Paul’s primary interest is involved in research on the survival of saltwater and freshwater fish after catch-and-release angling. The work has involved a series of experiments in the field (as part of recreational fishing events) and aquaria that aim to:

  1. Use recreational angling events and aquarium experiments to estimate the short-term post-release survival rates and key factors contributing towards the mortality of key saltwater and freshwater species associated with local angling-and-release practices.
  2. Use recreational angling events to quantify any changes in behaviour and the mortality associated with the predation of key species released from capture by hook and line.
  3. Where required, develop and test using the same format as (1) and (2), changes to procedures and/or gears that improve problematic post-release survival rates for particular species.

*NSW Department of Primary Industries was formed on July 1, 2004 through an amalgamation of NSW Agriculture, NSW Fisheries, State Forests of NSW and the NSW Department of Mineral Resources.
