Dr Raman has a BSc (Medical Science) from Khalsa College, Ludhiana and an MSc (Plant Genetics) from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, India.
She completed a PhD (Plant Breeding) from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, India, in 1995 and submitted her dissertation on the ‘Induction of genetic variability through somatic cell culture in rice’.
She joined NSW Agriculture* at Wagga Wagga in 1997 and undertook research on the development and validation of molecular markers in barley.
Later on Dr Raman joined the wheat molecular marker research team and identified a suite of molecular markers associated with polyphenol oxidase enzyme that is involved in darkening of wheat products and resistance to septoria tritici blotch in wheat.
She has also identified quantitative trait loci associated with various quality attributes in wheat under the project “Wheat extensibility genes” funded by the BioFirst initiative of NSW Government. These markers have been utilised in various wheat improvements programs of Australia.
During last 10 years, Dr Raman has published over 13 papers in journals of national and international repute.
Currently, she is working on the Project: “Development of molecular markers for Australian Canola breeding” funded by GRDC.
