This highly destructive timber pest can completely destroy items of furniture without much external evidence of the damage occurring. This painting shows the various life stages of the insect, all of which live in tunnels within the timber, while the background shows typical damage to a piece of wood furniture, including sawdust on the floor, the exit holes for the emerging adult beetles and a few beetles on the surface of the timber to indicate their size.
