NSW DPI Disability Action Plan 2009

Policy statement

NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) is committed to provide high quality service to all stakeholders and people of NSW. Whilst there are no specific services focusing on people with a disability every effort is made to ensure access to our services is available to all people. Where necessary, specific adjustments will be made to cater for the personal circumstances of individuals.

Department of Primary Industries functions and services

  1. Strong economic performance of primary industries
    We will contribute to the strong economic performance of primary industries in NSW by growing productivity, investing in research and development, and facilitating the use of innovative technologies. We will manage our public trading enterprise, Forests NSW, in a commercial manner.
  2. Appropriate access to and wise management of natural resources
    Our policies and programs will contribute to the sustainable use of natural resources. We will work with primary industries to ensure they have appropriate access to natural resources, adapt to climate change and contribute to the mitigation of its impacts. We will also work with primary industries to achieve improvements in natural resource and environmental management.
  3. Safe, healthy and biosecure industries
    We will support the development of healthy products and safe primary industries by proactively managing risks presented by pests, weeds, diseases, chemicals and natural disasters, and by regulating health and safety in the mining industry.
  4. A strong voice for primary industries
    We will provide a strong voice for primary industries. Through community and stakeholder consultation, by leading an informed debate on primary industries issues, and by providing information and expert advice, convey the potential social and economic benefits of sustainable primary industries.
  5. Excellence in people, innovation and service delivery
    We will provide a safe, satisfying and fair work environment, and have a skilled team working together to deliver excellent services and outcomes for our stakeholders in the areas of commercial services, innovative research, policy, regulation, education and advice.

Stakeholder profiles

The business of NSW DPI involves a very diverse operational structure that interacts with and services a wide range of stakeholders. These include:

  • People involved in the agricultural, fishing, mining and forestry industries;
  • Local Councils, Water Catchment Authorities, Livestock Health and Pest Authorities, other agencies involved in natural resource management;
  • Research and Educational Institutes;
  • Industry Associations;
  • Employees, students, volunteers and visitors.

Opportunities for stakeholders to contribute to decision making

NSW DPI consults widely with stakeholders and participates on many boards and committees dealing with issues of mutual interest. When dealing with legislative change, public comment is sought through the media and industry bodies. Individuals are encouraged to contribute their comments and /or participate in working parties or committees.

Website complies with current NSW Government standards (at the time of writing, this was W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines conformance level AA).

More than 80% of printed publications are available on the website.

Over 80% compliance to current standards.

Record and act upon complaints relating to the access of information.

The department rates accessibility as a high priority and seeks to establish accessibility to the widest audience possible with available resources.

3. Making government buildings and facilities physically accessible to people with a disability.

Ensure necessary adjustments are made to allow access for people with a disability.

Survey DPI sites and inform the Building & Engineering Section of access concerns.

Monitor expenditure on building projects involving access for people with a disability.

Monitor workplace adjustments for people with a disability.

Monitor Complaints Register and refer concerns to the Building & Engineering Section.

4. Assisting people with a disability to participate in public consultations and to apply for, and participate in, government advisory boards and committees.

Encourage all interested people to contribute to decision making on issues that appeal to them.

Record all complaints where individuals feel they have been unable to participate.

Monitor Complaints Register and respond to issues as appropriate.

5. Increasing employment participation of people with a disability in the NSW public sector.

Work towards achieving employment targets for people with a disability.

Conduct staff selection training workshops to ensure selection is based on merit.

People with a disability encouraged to seek employment and promotion.

Monitor establishment and reflect statistics in annual reports.

Monitor complaints from applicants and employees.

6. Using government decision-making, programs and operations to influence other agencies and sectors to improve community participation and quality of life for people with a disability.

7. Providing quality specialist and adapted services are not responsive or adequate to meet the needs of people with a disability.
