River red gum assessment
From the Autumn/Winter 2010 edition of Bush Telegraph Magazine.
In August 2009, the NSW Government asked the NSW Natural Resource Commission (NRC) to conduct a scientifically-based assessment of the Riverina red gum forests to determine a sustainable future for the forests, the forestry industry and local communities.
The assessment was based on the best available scientific information which shows that management of the forests must adapt to the changes in their circumstances resulting from river regulation, water overallocation, climate shifts and future climate change.
The assessment process included extensive consultation with local communities including indigenous groups, the red gum timber industry, environmental groups and other government and community stakeholders.
NRC’s report, which was delivered to the NSW Government late last year, made 16 recommendations covering a wide range of actions. Copies of the report are available from the NRC website www.nrc.nsw.gov.au.
The Government has been considering the report with a view to ensuring that a proper balance is struck between conservation and the long term sustainability of forest industries and local communities.
The NRC is also assessing and making recommendations on the cypress forests in south-western NSW. The separate report of this study will be considered by the Government later in the year.
