Future vision for Sydney forest

From the Spring 2006 edition of Bush Telegraph Magazine.

A research centre and education hub since the New South Wales Forestry Commission acquired the land in 1937, Cumberland State Forest has flourished from a cleared paddock and fruit orchard to become a vibrant forest destination in Sydney’s north-western suburbs.

Today, the forest is a valuable resource for both Forests NSW and the public, providing an attractive destination for recreational and educational use and enjoyment. It also makes a significant contribution to conservation in the local area.

During 2006, a new strategic Plan of Management for Cumberland State Forest is being developed to direct future management. Forests NSW project manager, Hilary Smith, said bringing together the many and varied community views about the unique forest had been challenging.

“We know Cumberland State Forest is valued not only by staff and volunteers but by the broader community so it is important to involve them in the development of the plan,” Hilary said.

“The plan will take a long-term view, based on the principles of sustainability, to guide the development of the forest as we move towards the 100th anniversary of the New South Wales Forestry Commission in 2016.

“The plan will guide decisions and planning. It defines key values and management objectives and outlines strategies and an implementation plan that will guide future directions, changes and improvements,” Hilary said

“The vision for Cumberland State Forest is to be a showcase for sustainable forest management, and a centre of excellence for sustainable forest management and research in NSW.”

Copies of the Plan of Management will be available on-line at www.forest.nsw.gov.au/cumberland.
