The work of some of Australia’s leading wood designers was the focus of ‘Design + Wood 2007’ staged in Sydney in August.
Forests NSW sponsored the exhibition, with chief executive, Nick Roberts, speaking at the open-ing at Depot Galleries and presenting Forests NSW ‘choice award’.
“We were approached by the Woodworkers’ Association of NSW to support the exhibition,” Nick said.
“It aligned perfectly with our business philosophy of maximising the value of native timbers and also increasing community awareness of the sustainability of timber harvested from New South Wales native forests.
“It was fantastic to see such a range of contemporary pieces in the one gallery space. It was a rare opportunity for those who appreciate both contemporary design and Australian wood.”
According to organisers, ‘Design + Wood 2007’ was held to make a bold statement about the place of timber in the evolution of Australian design and to challenge the notion that contemporary furniture is, by definition, created from man-made materials.
Sixteen of the country’s leading designer-makers were showcased in the exhibition, with works demonstrating the warmth and flexibility of wood and capturing the spirit of the maker.
Forests NSW award was presented to Nick Statham for his sculpture and strung chairs.
“I work with a wide range of materials but it is always the wood that sparks the creative process and design,” he said.
“We look forward to more partnerships that will showcase the beauty, functionality and sustain-ability of Australian native timbers,” Nick Roberts said.
