Bombala community group Platypus Pals extended ‘World Environment Day’ in June into ‘We Love Trees Week’, joining with Forests NSW and National Parks and Wildlife Service to encourage local schools to ‘think green’.
A highlight of the week was a series of tree plantings at a number of local schools in the southern Monaro including Bombala and Delegate Preschools and Public Schools, St Joseph’s School (Bombala), Bibbenluke Public School and Ando Public School (near Bibbenluke).
Forests NSW donated five Wollemi pines and 200 information packs containing such things as stickers, colouring-in books and fact sheets.
Forests NSW operations forester, Tim Gillespie-Jones, said it was great to be a part of the local event and he was looked forward to seeing how the Wollemi pines grew in the region.
Su King from the local Platypus Pals group thanked Forests NSW for its participation and donation.
“The week was such a success with children learning a lot about trees in general that we hope to run it again next year,” she said.
Su said some of the activities conducted during the week included tree bingo where children won educational books; a photography competition for the biggest tree on the eastern side of the Snowy River; and fabulous bush walks organised by NPWS and Parks Victoria.
