From the Spring 2008 edition of Bush Telegraph Magazine.
The diverse work of our people is again highlighted in this issue of Bush Telegraph. From supervising the production of mallee charcoal in Western NSW, tracking foxes as part of eradication efforts through to determining the carbon storage capacity of forests and timber products – fascinating and important work is undertaken every day in and around our public forests.
With timber production the primary objective of our management of State forests, there are many responsibilities that come along with this to ensure sustainability on environmental, social and economic levels. On page 14, read about the role Forests NSW has played in a cooperative program to target fox populations, bringing benefits to both native malleefowl and graziers. On page 13, we draw your attention to the production of charcoal for barbecuing, a lesser known forest product, but one which many of us use on summer weekends.
Finally, on page 10, we again focus on the important role forests and timber products play in addressing climate change. The research highlights the important choices we face as individuals when building our homes. Timber is the most environmentally-friendly choice.
This is the final quarterly issue of the magazine. Look out for the next issue in March 2009, but remember to renew your subscription to keep up-to-date with the latest news from Forests NSW.
