Spend a few hours next school holidays discovering Australias only metropolitan State forest and learn a little about forestry and native timbers in the process.
School holiday activities at Sydneys Cumberland State Forest immerse kids in the forest and encourage them to discover more about trees, timber, forest products and the way forests are managed.
Acting Sydney forests manager, Tim Liston, said kids loved the program and parents were enchanted with the beauty and convenience of Cumberland.
All activities include a short bushwalk where kids discover forest plants and animals, as well as talk about the different uses for timber and forest products, Tim said.
Kids love craft activities and always get to take something home to remind them of their forest outing.
Parents can participate too, helping to make a masterpiece to take home and then head over to the plant nursery or have a snack at the on-site café, Tim said.
New activities for the October 2009 holidays include:
- Forest Board game - become a forest manager and make a game to test your skills
- Flying High - Paper is an important forest product. Find out where it comes from and how its made and then make a paper aeroplane
- Possum Pals - learn about different possums and make a mask. Best for 3-6 year olds.
School holiday activities are for kids under 10 years of age. Activities last for one hour and are supervised by a ranger.
Bookings are essential. Program details are available online at www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/forests or phone 1300 655 687 or 02 9871 3377, for a free program.
