Passport to scenic southern forests

From the Spring/Summer 2009 edition of Bush Telegraph Magazine.

From  Bermagui to Bega and inland to Bombala, an abundance of recreational pursuits  await. Forests NSW has scheduled the release of the new Far South Coast Forest  Map in September 2009 to add to the growing series of maps that cover the  forests of NSW. The new map is your passport to explore the State forests of  the far south coast.

The new Far South Coast Forest Map is a  1:150 000 scale map covering some of the most breathtaking scenery in NSW,  with a mix of native forests and plantation pine to stimulate the senses.

The map continues where the South Coast Forest Map leaves off,  starting just north of Bermagui, then south to the Mallacoota Inlet in  Victoria. Coastal towns featured along the way include Tathra, Merimbula and  Eden. Inland the map reaches west to Bega and Bombala.

Forests NSW Southern Region manager, Ian Barnes, describes the map as  an exciting new tool for holidaymakers.

There is so much to see and do down here. Extensive roads and fire  trails through our scented pine and eucalypt forests are great for horse  riding, mountain bike riding, hiking, four-wheel driving and trail bike riding,  Ian said. Many areas are easily accessible, for example the town of Eden is  virtually surrounded by state forest and Bondi State Forest is only 20 minutes  drive from Bombala.

You can explore forests on foot, horseback or on two or four wheels.

See the forests of stringybarks, monkey gums and silvertop ash  throughout Nullica and East Boyd State Forests towards the coast to Eden. These  forests also support a great diversity of wildlife.

There are many scenic picnic and camping areas on the far south coast.

Ludwigs Creek Picnic Area in Nadgee State Forest and Nalbaugh Falls  in Nalbaugh State Forest are very popular, Ian said.

The Far South Coast Forest Map is just one of a series of maps Forests  NSW produce. Others in the series include the Central Coast, Lower North Coast,  Mid North Coast, South Coast and Central West.

The colourful fold-out maps show all regularly maintained roads and  trails, walking tracks, recreation areas and lookouts in State forests and  National Parks.

The reverse side contains photographs and commentary on the history of  forestry in the area, and details of recreation sites, including top must-see  sites, and a recreation facilities matrix.

The Far South Coast Forest Map was produced with assistance from  National Parks & Wildlife Service.
