Finding out about forestry careers
From the Summer 2006 edition of Bush Telegraph Magazine.
More than 200 high school students from Batlow, Tumut, Tumbarumba and Gundagai attended a ‘Careers in Forestry 2006’ expo at the Tumut showgrounds in September.
Forests NSW along with a number of south west slopes processors, the School of Resources, Environment and Society from ANU, and the Forest Industry Council mounted displays and spoke to the students about careers in the timber industry.
Forests NSW Hume regional manager, Bob Germantse, said the expo gave students an opportunity to see the different phases of the industry from growing to harvesting and processing, and an idea of what careers were available.
Norske Skog’s fibre operations coordinator, Malcolm Alexander, said forestry was such a vital part of the region’s economy and to keep it that way, a ready supply of skilled and trained labour was needed.
Joe McCormick, from Batlow Technology School, said the expo was an interesting day and a good learning experience.
“I learnt about what sort of money you get, what sort of opportunities there are, and what you have to do to get a job in the timber industry,” he said.
