Safety record for staff in Monaro Region

From the Summer 2006 edition of Bush Telegraph Magazine.

Working a quarter of a million hours without incurring an accident is a significant achievement for any workforce, but when your workplace is subject to the vagaries of nature it is a truly remarkable achievement.

Continuing an excellent trend, Forests NSW Monaro Region has reached another significant safety milestone by achieving 250 000 hours without recording a lost time accident.

Forests NSW acting chief executive officer, Alastair Howard, commended staff on this four year achievement, particularly as it has been achieved in a forest workplace environment that can change every day.

Alastair said safety was a high priority for Forests NSW, with the organisation continuing to focus on and evolve its major safety management system, under the banner ‘Think Safe, Act Safe, Stay Safe’.

“With their exemplary attitude to safety, staff in Monaro Region are well-placed to contribute to and implement our safety management system,” he said.

Alastair said it was a tribute to the region that it had been able to implement the new safety management system and still make a significant financial contribution to Forests NSW.

“To be able to make a strong contribution towards safety, while maintaining a strong commercial focus, is a well-practiced skill in Monaro Region,” he said.

Chairman of the region’s Occupational Health and Safety Committee, John Dallimore, said he was extremely proud of the region’s safety record.

“We all want to get home safely each day, and so we make sure we talk about safety in relation to everything we do.”

“We talk about the risks, and try to come up with the safest ways of doing jobs. That is why we’ve been able to achieve this record,” John said.
