From the chief executire
From the Summer 2007 edition of Bush Telegraph Magazine.
Most people look forward to the heat of summer, but for Forests NSW summer brings more than sticky black flies and hazy days. For all public land managers, the arrival of summer sees months of preparation and training come to the fore as bushfires inevitably break out. We are hoping this summer will be better than the last, which saw fires in pine plantations and native forests around the state.
While we are alert to the dangers, we ask visitors to State forests to pay attention and obey all fire restrictions to ensure their safety and the future of NSW forests and the timber resource.
I’m pleased to note that this issue of Bush Telegraph demonstrates the high level skills and adaptability of our staff. Key personnel are currently utilising emergency management skills usually employed in fire situations in efforts to contain equine influenza . Meanwhile, our harvest planning staff are embracing the new generation of GPS technology to generate quicker and more accurate operational plans, with 3D airborne technologies also being trialled.
But it’s not just technology we are bringing into play. We are continuing to lead the way in eucalypt research, with trials of Eucalyptus dunnii in north eastern NSW to maximise the value of species and monitoring of water flow properties of catchments of the Karuah River on the north coast.
I hope you enjoy this edition of the magazine and its insights into our people, technology and research.
