Aiming for more local volunteers
From the Winter 2007 edition of Bush Telegraph Magazine.
Forests NSW has a new policy in place to encourage people to become involved with the management of State forests.
Manager community programs, Sally Arundell, said the number of volunteers partnering with Forests NSW has steadily increased over the past ten years.
“Programs like bush regeneration in the urban settings of Cumberland State Forest in Sydney and Strickland State Forest near Gosford have really delivered fantastic on-ground benefits, as well as giving friendship, personal satisfaction and new skills to the people involved,” Sally said.
“And of course we have an ongoing relationship with professional volunteer organisations like Conservation Volunteers Australia and Greencorps.
“We initiated a new volunteer policy last year, and are developing strategies to facilitate more people becoming involved in on-ground works.
“It would be great to expand our volunteer base with people from local areas particularly to participate in our program with Conservation Volunteers Australia,” Sally said.
“There is an enormous amount of community interest in this kind of work, especially from four-wheel-drive clubs, many of which already help with projects like Clean Up Australia Day in State forests that they use.”
Sally suggested that any individual or group interested in discussing volunteering or volunteer projects should contact her on Ph: (02) 9872 0134 or email sallya@sf.nsw.gov.au.
