From the chief executive
From the Winter 2008 edition of Bush Telegraph Magazine.
Developing a diverse career in a sustainable industry that can make a difference in areas ranging from global climate change to the local economy is an attractive proposition. It might come as a surprise to some that this industry is in fact the forestry industry. That’s why Forests NSW has recently embarked on a campaign to attract more forestry and environmental science graduates to our workforce.
Our staff recently attended AusTimber 2008 in South Australia. This event is a showcase for the industry, and it was no surprise for us to find we aren’t alone in actively seeking skilled workers. Attracting skilled staff is an issue across the industry, from people to operate hi-tech harvesting and sawmilling machinery to people to work in plantation establishment and native forest management.
We took part in a seminar with school career counsellors, exposing them to the range of options and related university and TAFE courses available to school leavers, with many expressing surprise at the opportunities available.
Forests NSW has worked hard to establish a culture of excellence. We want a workplace where safety is paramount, where our customers are satisfied, our forest management is sustainable and our people recognised as our most valuable asset.
I hope that this culture, combined with the attraction of working in an area crucial to the future of our communities and environment, will see more young people entering forestry training and seeking employment with Forests NSW. Read more about career opportunities on page 13 of this issue.
