Forests NSW teams up with top 4WD group

From the Autumn/Winter 2009 edition of Bush Telegraph Magazine.

Forests NSW and the peak four-wheel-drive organisation for NSW and the  ACT have entered into a new partnership to work on a  range of initiatives in State forests.

A new memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by Forests NSW chief  executive Nick Roberts and the president of Four Wheel Drive NSW and ACT, Greg  Redfern, in late 2008.

“The MoU is a record of how we will work together, in particular  involving association members as volunteers in the support of on-ground  management programs compatible with ecologically sustainable and socially and  culturally responsible visitor use,” Nick said.

The association is a peak user group representing the interests of  member clubs and individuals who have an interest in recreational vehicle  touring.

Greg said his association promoted responsible four wheel drive and all  wheel drive touring, environmental awareness, driver education and skills  development.

“There are around 100 clubs in the association with a membership of more  than 4 000,” he said.

Nick said the partnership activities would generally be targeted at  State forest areas with low commercial timber values.

“One of the benefits is that these are often the State forests where we  have a reduced presence but are experiencing high levels of illegal  recreational use,” Nick said.
