Healthy pigs bring home the bacon

A free workshop for local pig producers at the Forbes Inn Hotel on Friday, August 14 at 1pm will highlight the important role animal health plays in boosting production efficiency.

NSW Department of Industry and Investment livestock officer, Jayce Morgan, said a recent saleyard audit indicated that while producers were doing a good job there was scope to enhance profitability.

"It’s a simple equation, healthy pigs are more productive and save money," Ms Morgan said.

"We want to discuss how producers can better ensure their animals remain free from diseases which can impact on production and look at some of the tools which are available to ensure the market recognises the efforts they are making.

"The PigPass quality assurance system and national vendor declarations help guarantee the future of the industry."

Pig health technical specialist, Trish Holyoake, and Ms Morgan will present information on the prevention and management of common pig diseases following a light lunch at the hotel.

"We’ve organised the workshop to coincide with the Forbes sale day and expect a strong turnout," she said.

Producers are requested to RSVP by Monday, August 10 by contacting Jayce Morgan, (02) 6349 9717 or jayce.morgan@dpi.nsw.gov.au

The seminar is sponsored by Australian Pork Ltd and the Australian Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre.
