Practical courses to help farmers identify parasites

01 Sep 2009

Industry & Investment NSW PROfarm courses on parasites in farm animals have proved so successful, they have been extended to the south west of the State.

The one day course includes theory and practical sessions on understanding parasite lifecycles, identifying worm eggs, and interpreting the results.

Industry & Investment NSW PROfarm officer Maryke Archbold-Hession said the popular course is available for producers wanting to understand and manage worms in their livestock.

"This practical course will be delivered by experienced officers from Industry & Investment NSW," Ms Archbold-Hession said.

"People who attend will find the course hands on, learning how to perform faecal egg counts for worms, they will have access to a microscope and samples to practice on throughout the day.

"We have had participants from a variety of backgrounds including primary producers, vets, high school teachers, animal health organisations, Livestock Health and Pest Authority staff and Industry & Investment NSW staff.

"They have been applying their skills to camels, cattle, horses, sheep, goats and alpacas."

The course covers the following areas:

  • Introduction to parasites and basic worm cycles
  • Learning how to use a microscope
  • Learning how to take samples and complete faecal egg counts
