Free grapevine guide smokes
Industry & Investment NSW viticulturist, Leo Quirk, inspects flowering Chardonnay vines in a Riverina vineyard.
Smoky flavours - good and bad, understanding heat stress and enhancing the accuracy of winegrape yield forecasts feature in the new Grapevine Management Guide 2009 -10.
Industry & Investment (I&I) NSW viticulturist, Leo Quirk, said the guide outlines the latest developments and reports from the National Wine & Grape Industry Centre which partners I&I NSW, NSW Wine Industry Association and Charles Sturt University.
"Winegrape growers can check out opportunities to improve soil health with cover crops and compost, and get the latest information on vine nutrition and seasonal root dynamics," Mr Quirk said.
"Maximising grape quality and minimising costs in a market oversupplied with winegrapes is a big challenge for growers this season.
"The guide focuses on the management of limited water supplies and the minimisation of climatic impacts such as heat stress.
"Weve also updated the information to reflect the latest and most practical approaches to pest and disease management with a special section on grapevine trunk diseases."
