Long term planning options for farmers

16 Mar 2009

A free workshop for farmers on options to consider when planning long term decision-making will be held at the Coro Club at Griffith from 8.30 AM on Wednesday April 8.

NSW Department of Primary Industries Griffith based drought support worker, Lou Revelant, said the workshop would provide information on long term options available to farmers wanting to examine their viability, consider other enterprises, or investigate alternatives to farming.

“There will be sessions on the skills needed for long term viability planning, technical skills, diversifying into new crops and temporary water trading,” he said.

“Other sessions will focus on alternatives such as leasing the farm and subdividing the property.

“For those looking at selling up, there will be a speaker discussing assistance available to irrigators considering exiting the industry.”

Mr Revelant said the workshop was designed for those wanting to objectively assess their situation, even if they expect to continue as farmers.

“The best way to objectively examine all the options is to openly discuss the range of options before making any decisions and the consequences of difficult life changing decisions,” he said.

“A large part of the day will be devoted to looking at alternatives and coping with change.

“John and Janice Moore case study presentation will give participants an insight into life after farming.

“Skills recognition and training will be discussed to help guide those looking at alternative employment options.

“Relocation and pension options will be discussed, along with managing change and health and well being.

“There will also be updates from rural financial counsellors and Centrelink on exceptional circumstances and interest rate subsidies.”

To attend, please register with NSW DPI by Friday 3 April by contacting Anita Zan on 6960 1300, or anita.zan@dpi.nsw.gov.au , or by fax on 6963 0255.
