Sam Bailey to speak at Tooma Farm Family Gathering

16 Oct 2009

Well known inspirational speaker, farmer, pilot, author and quadriplegic, Sam Bailey, will speak at an Upper Murray Farm Family Gathering at Tooma on 28 October.

NSW Department of Primary Industries Southern Riverina drought support worker, Don Burrowes, said Sam will talk about his life from early childhood to today, including the day his life changed forever with a road accident that put him in a wheelchair.

"It promises to be a rollercoaster ride, making people laugh, cry, appreciate what they have and show that nothing is impossible," he said.

"The road accident instantly changed Sam from a schoolboy sportsman and outback jackeroo into a quadriplegic.

"It be a story of triumph rather than a story of sadness, with Sam telling how he beat the odds to fulfil his lifelong dream to be a farmer and to fly.

"There will also be romance when Sam tells how he proposed to ABC rural reporter Jenny Black live on radio.

"Sams book on his experiences has become a bestseller, selling more than 50,000 copies.

"Sam will tell his story in his own earthy style that captures the spirit of having a go."

The Farm Family Gathering featuring Sam Bailey will be held at the Tooma Hall on Wednesday October 28 at 6.00 pm.

Mr Burrowes said the Tooma Farm Family Gathering was an opportunity for farmers and their families in the district to get together and take a break from the worries of the drought.

"It is a good opportunity to socialise with friends and peers burdened by drought, and get some information that could help coping through this tough time," he said.

"We will be providing information on drought and mental health services, along with a free barbeque meal."

Further information is available from Don Burrowes on (02) 6033 4245, 0427 324 033, or don.burrowes@industry.nsw.gov.au

Numbers are strictly limited. Please RSVP to Don Burrowes by 26 October.
