What's bugging your cucumbers?

29 May 2009

A new field identification guide has been published by the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) to help identify pest, diseases, disorders and beneficial insects in cucurbit crops.

Pests, Beneficials, Diseases and Disorders in Cucurbits: Field Identification Guide was produced by NSW DPI with funding from Horticulture Australia and AusVeg after the need for such a publication was identified by Horticulture Australia.

Coordinator of the project, DPI horticulturist at Yanco, Tony Napier, said the 150 page full colour book was designed to assist growers, farm workers, students and consultants working with cucurbit crops such as cucumber, pumpkin, squash, watermelon and rockmelon.

"The guide is designed to be easy to use in the field, being small enough to carry in a glove box or pocket, and tough enough to withstand moisture, dirt and frequent page turning," he said.

"It contains 270 colour photographs, along with numerous illustrations, succinct text and a comprehensive list of organisms and nutritional disorders.

"The main use for the guide is intended to be as a diagnostic tool to help with pest and disease identification, drawing on the experience of a range of scientists and industry experts.

"Information is given on how to identify each organism, disorder or beneficial, and if necessary, its’ importance, damage caused and management strategies."

Pests, Beneficials, Diseases and Disorders in Cucurbits: Field Identification Guide has been sent out free to levy paying cucurbit farmers.

The publication is also available from the NSW DPI bookshop for $30.80, plus postage and handling, by calling 1800 028 374.
