More than 100 abalone seized near Eden
A 33-year old Moruya man is expected to face court after allegedly being caught with more than 50 times the legal bag limit of abalone - with nearly all of them undersized - Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald said today.
Minister Macdonald said this is "another great result" for our officers on the ground.
"DPI officers stopped a car on a remote access track while patrolling the coastline in Ben Boyd National Park north of Eden, on Sunday 27 January," he said.
"It’s alleged that after the car was stopped by the officers, the 33-year-old man jumped out and ran away.
"DPI officers then gave chase. It’s alleged that when they caught up to him they searched his bag and found 112 abalone meats and assorted diving gear."
The legal bag limit for abalone is 2 per person per day.
DPI officers questioned the Moruya man, who allegedly told them where he had shucked the abalone.
"Of the 112 black lip abalone seized, 94 were of a prohibited size," Minister Macdonald said.
"Some were found to be as small as 9cm - the minimum legal length for abalone in NSW is 11.5cm."
The man is expected to be summonsed to face the Eden Local court on several abalone related charges including; possessing more than the legal bag limit, which carries a maximum penalty of $11,000, 3 months imprisonment or both and obstructing a Fisheries Officer which has a maximum penalty of $22,000, 3 months imprisonment or both.
"I would like to congratulate the officers involved on another great result, and put abalone thieves on notice, if you break the law, you will get caught and suffer the consequences," Mr Macdonald said.
"This is an issue the Iemma Government takes extremely seriously."
