Fun day of fishing for those with special needs

26 Oct 2009

A fun day of fishing activities for people with special needs is being held at Industry & Investment NSW Narrandera Fisheries Centre on Saturday 7 November.

A group of 20 people from Kurrajong Waratah as well as their carers and families will take part in the workshop, run by the Centres education officers with assistance from the Narrandera Lions Club.

"Participants will be able to practise knot tying, casting, and catch and release of numerous fish species including silver perch, golden perch and Murray cod in a specially stocked pond to increase their chances," Industry & Investment NSW Centre manager Les Rava said.

"The annual workshop is a valuable opportunity for people with special needs to interact with other people while learning valuable recreational fishing skills."

The workshop is being funded by The NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts, which dedicates more than $50,000 a year to ensure community engagement workshops continue across the State.

Mr Rava said the Narrandera Fisheries Centre includes a hatchery, grow-out ponds, the John Lake Centre for visitor education and aquariums, and is the ideal place for community groups to learn more about fishing.

The clinic will run from 10 am to 3pm. Lunch is being supported by the Narrandera Lions Club.
