Keen young anglers and would-be anglers can learn how to fish or brush up on their fishing skills at two NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) fishing workshops, which will be held on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 January.

The two workshops will be held at the NSW DPI Narrandera Fisheries Centre, Buckingbong Road, off the Sturt Highway, from 10 am to 3 pm.

The NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts provide funding for the workshop program, which dedicates more than $50 000 a year to ensure community engagement workshops continue across the State.

NSW DPI Fisheries Education Officer, Brett Smith, said the fishing workshops would give children aged between 8 and 14 years the chance to learn and practise casting, rigging and tying knots.

“Youngsters will also learn about bag and size limits, aquatic habitats, threatened species and ethical fishing practices,” he said.

Mr Smith said fishing workshops were being held around the State as part of the NSW Government’s commitment to teaching children about recreational fishing and habitat conservation.

“The Narrandera Fisheries Centre, a centre of excellence for native fish species research, is the ideal place for community groups to learn more about freshwater fishing,” he said.

“The youngsters will get the chance to put their new skills into action. They will be able to fish in a pond specially stocked to improve their chances of a good catch.”

The cost is $40 a child, which includes a rod and reel, shirt, hat and a bbq lunch.

Numbers are limited to a maximum of 30 and bookings are essential. To secure a place please telephone (02) 6959 9021 by Tuesday 15 January before 4 pm.
