Open Day to show landholders how to make their properties more fish friendly

08 Apr 2009

A ‘River Revival - Fish Friendly Farms’ Open Day at the Euabalong Demonstration Reach on Wednesday 29 April will help show landholders how to make their properties more fish friendly.

The Open Day, to be held at the Euabalong Town Common, will commence at 4:30pm. It includes a free BBQ and a ribbon cutting ceremony to open the Demonstration Reach.

The Demonstration Reach has been established to exhibit the role of instream and riverside aquatic habitat rehabilitation in assisting native fish recovery in the Lower Lachlan region.

Works have recently been completed and have highlighted the practical delivery of a variety of rehabilitation activities available to landholders adjacent to the Lachlan River.

The project has been implemented by the Lachlan Catchment Management Authority, Cobar Shire Council, Euabalong Town Common Committee, and NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI).

NSW DPI Aquatic Habitat Rehabilitation Conservation Manager, Nathan Reynoldson,  said the project aimed to demonstrate fish habitat rehabilitation techniques to landholders within their region and has encouraged them to develop, manage and conduct on-ground work at their properties.

He said the Demonstration Reach, established on the Lachlan River in the township of Euabalong, adopted bank protection and stock management techniques by providing alternative off stream watering points and stock exclusion zones.

"The works effectively repair degraded aquatic habitats, which is an important step in assisting the recovery of native fish populations in the region," Mr Reynoldson said.

"As well as ensuring a healthy habitat for native fish populations, the project has  ensured the protection of the town water supply pumps, while maintaining productive use of adjacent land".

There are many other ways landholders can make their properties more fish friendly. Further information about fish friendly farms can be found on the NSW DPI website at www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/habitat/rehabilitating/fish-friendly-farms

‘River Revival - Fish Friendly Farms’ information kits will be provided.
