Wet weather warning for mid north coast forests

25 Jan 2012

With heavy rain and flooding affecting much of the mid north coast, Forests NSW is urging people to avoid north eastern forests until conditions improve.

“The heavy rain is making road conditions very dangerous and we are encouraging people to limit non-essential travel in affected areas,” Forests NSW operations manager, north east region, Tom Newby said.

“Roads have become very slippery and rapidly rising creeks and waterways and fallen tree limbs present a number of safety hazards.

“Driving on saturated roads can also cause major damage to roads and cause environmental problems such as soil erosion and water pollution.”

Mr Newby said some areas have recorded over 300 millimetres of rain with more predicted for the coming days and into next week.

“To ensure staff safety and minimise impacts on roads and other infrastructure, we’ve ceased our own haulage and forestry operations,” Mr Newby said.

“A large area of state forest is currently being affected by the wet weather and flooding.

“There are around 500,000 hectares of forests with around 6,400 kilometres of roads and fire trails in the north eastern region.

“The public is urged to stay safe this Australia Day and avoid the slippery roads.”
