Australian honey has a reputation in the world market as being a premuim quality product. Seventy to eighty per cent of our honey is produced from native flora, especially eucalyptus.

Australia produces about 31,000 tonnes of honey per year, with an estimated gross value of production of about $49 million. Half of this honey is consumed domestically and the remainder is exported in prepack and bulk form, making Australia the world's fourth largest exporter of honey.

RIRDC's Honeybee Program aims to improve the productivity and profitability of the Australian beekeeping industry. This report includes information on the following:

  • industry overview
  • resource base
  • nutrition and hive management
  • equipment
  • pollination
  • queen bees and packages
  • diseases and pests.
