This book includes information on 75 species of trees and shrubs, including eucalypts, acacias, and a range of other species and introduced trees, to assist landholders to select more appropriate species for planting.
Although the focal region for the book is the central west of NSW (bounded by Narromine and Forbes in the east, Quambone in the north, Gilgunnia and Hillston in the west, and Narrandera in the south), readers from a larger area of NSW will find the book useful.
In selecting species for inclusion in this Glove Box Guide, preference has been given to those with a range of uses or functions, such as for forage, honey production, shelter, timber and oil, or for ornamental purposes. Each plant is described by its form, habitat, uses, buds and flowers, and readers should find the glossy photos useful in identifying species. The book also includes a table which summarises the attributes of all species and indicates uses, salt tolerance and preferred soils.
The majority of data come from collaborative research and demonstration studies that were established at the Condobolin Agricultural and Advisory Station in 1950. People interested in seeing the mature trees can visit the Research Station and follow signposted walks.
