Running time: 13 minutes
Production date: 1996

The 'Haymaker' program is concerned with the identification of problems and a coordinated approach to problem solving by hay producers. It combines the on-farm practical skills and the expertise of producers, agronomists and irrigation officers/engineers. Actual farm production records and comparisons show that irrigated lucerne growers have realised a 13% to 20% increase in production, which in real terms would increase income by $1000 per hectare.

This video will assist the lucerne grower to:

  • measure stand density (plants per metre);
  • identify weeds, insects (aphids and heliothis), diseases, and nutrition problems;
  • choose the right variety;
  • identify soil type;
  • calculate the water requirement for optimum growth.

(Production record cards and the grower’s information kit are available from NSW DPI's agronomists and irrigation officers.)
