This publication provides an overview of the important properties and problems of the cracking clays and loams used for growing irrigated cotton in NSW. It discusses how to diagnose the soil's physical condition, and provides suggestions about land selection.

Cotton production is more demanding of the soil than most other forms of cropping, as there are many field operations that have the potential to damage the soil. Cotton has a long growing season, and growers need to maintain or improve the soil’s physical and chemical fertility. The main objective is prevention of damage to the soil, rather than correction.
