Tea tree oil is produced by distilling the leaves of the tree Melaleuca alternifolia, and occasionally other Melaleuca species. The oil has been produced for over 60 years, and until the 1980s came solely from natural stands of tea tree that were harvested by hand. The plantation industry began in the 1980s to meet the expanding demand from both the overseas and domestic markets. The oil is used as an antibacterial and antifungal agent in a range of health care products.
