WormTest is a quick, simple and economical way to check the worm and fluke burden of your livestock. WormTest is used to monitor worm egg counts and is an invaluable tool to help achieve sustainable worm control.
Why test?
- Monitor worm burdens and types of worms present to make informed decisions on drenching requirements for your animals.
- Test the effectiveness of the last drench by collecting samples 10-14 days after using a drench (longer for longer acting drenches).
- Check worm levels prior to DrenchTest.
- Help evaluate your worm control program.
- Can save you the expense of unnecessary drenching.
- Identify problem internal parasites on your property.
- Test for liver and stomach fluke.
Tests available
The WormTest kit offers a range of different tests to help meet the needs of individual clients. These include WormTest Gold, WormTest Basic and two levels of fluke tests.
| Worm egg count | What you get |
|---|---|
| WormTest Gold count only | 10 individual egg counts with an average. |
| WormTest Gold count + type | 10 individual egg counts + average. Faeces from the 10 samples are bulked together and cultured. The larvae are identified into worm species. |
| WormTest Basic count only | The 10 samples are bulked into 2 egg counts. |
| WormTest Basic count + type | 2 bulked egg counts + all 10 samples are bulked together and cultured for worm identification. |
| Fluke egg count | What you get |
| 2 bulks (use for sheep) | The 10 samples are bulked into 2 fluke counts. This test can identify the presence of both liver and stomach fluke. This test is recommended for sheep, goats and alpacas. |
| 5 bulks - In cattle, 2 or 5 bulks can be used; 2 bulks is lesser cost but may fail to detect low fluke burdens. | The 10 samples are bulked into 5 fluke counts. This test can identify the presence of both liver and stomach fluke. It is recommended for cattle samples. |
For current laboratory charges, please refer to laboratory charges (Parasitology section) in the Vet Lab Manual.
It is recommended that you discuss your worm monitoring requirements with your local/district veterinarian or advisor.
