OJD

Ovine Johne's Disease

  • About OJD
Covers descriptions of the disease, vaccination, restocker sheep, sheep health statements, diagnosis and disease risk management. The National and NSW approach to management of OJD from 31 March 2008 and historical documents relating to the management of OJD
  • The National Sheep Health Statement
A mandatory form for all sheep offered for sale or agisted in NSW, other than exempt sheep. The Sheep Health Statement may be downloaded from the web or obtained from your agent or your local Rural Lands Protection Board.
  • Prevalence areas
Australia is divided into three prevalence areas based on the known or estimated levels of disease.
  • Exclusion areas
Some districts of NSW with very low levels of disease have established self-funded and self-managed Exclusion Areas to minimise disease spread.
  • Management areas
Some districts of NSW, generally with higher levels of disease, are encouraging producers to manage their own OJD risk by using strategies such as vaccination, on-farm management and informed purchase of sheep.
  • Sheep movement
OJD zones were removed on 30th June 2004. They have been replaced by a nationally agreed trading system, using Sheep Health Statements and assurance-based credit (ABC) points.
  • OJD manual & legislation
The OJD manual contains all the current NSW policy, procedure and information circulars. Legislation documents detail current legal requirements, particularly for sheep movements.
