Rice industry's future hinges on co-operation: Farrer Medallist

Date: 04 Aug 2003

The future of the Australian rice industry hinges on continued co-operation within and between the industry, scientists and farm advisors, the 2003 Farrer Medal recipient and NSW Agriculture rice breeder, Laurie Lewin, said today.

Dr Lewin was delivering the 2003 Farrer Medal Oration after receiving the prestigious medal from NSW Agriculture Director-General, Dr Richard Sheldrake, at a special ceremony at Leeton, the heart of the Australian rice industry.

"Many challenges lie ahead for the Australian rice industry and these can be met through new science and continued co-operation," Dr Lewin said.

"Australian rice continues to compete on highly distorted world markets. This challenge has been met through efficient production of high quality rice."

Dr Lewin said that the success of the Australian rice industry would be tested in the future as new markets emerged creating new challenges.

"Specialist variety types will be required for new markets and improved quality is required for existing varieties," he said.

"And as a result of this the trend towards production of new rice-based products that add value to bulk will continue.

"Another challenge facing the industry is access to water. Rice water productivity has shown regular improvement and has nearly doubled in the last 20 years … further improvement is needed here and co-operation is crucial.

"However, it is pleasing that the rice industry has continued to address environmental management in the face of tough water issues.

"The development of an environmental management program to guarantee environmental stewardship by rice growers and the industry at large is an important development that must be continued."

Dr Lewin said the recognition afforded by the Farrer Medal was for team effort.

"It is the contribution of members of the NSW Agriculture rice breeding team, extension and industry groups that have made many of the rice industry's achievement's possible," he said.

"It is only through such co-operative effort that the rice industry will remain a strong and important contributor to the regional and national economy."
