Communique from the NSW Agricultural Advisory Council on Gene Technology - September 2004
Released/reviewed: 14 Sep 2004
The New South Wales Agricultural Advisory Council on Gene Technology held its 9th meeting on September 14 in Sydney.
The Council noted the resignation of Ms Kirsten Pietzner, formerly representing the Grains Research and Development Corporation, and the retirement of Dr Lindsay Cook, formerly representing the NSW Department of Primary Industries. The formal appointment of new representatives of these organisations is being undertaken.
Council explored the risks and benefits of genetically modified canola with emphasis on the development of a bibliography focusing on key publications from Australia and overseas. In addition, Council considered the appropriateness of two studies covering the liability associated with GM crops – one prepared in the United Kingdom, and the other in Victoria – to the situation in New South Wales. Council continued to develop a checklist for the requirements of future research trials and will progress this further after consultation. The possibility of Council inspecting GM canola research sites in Victoria and/or South Australia was also discussed but no firm decision was taken until more information on the nature of the trials is obtained.
The next meeting of Council will be on 4 November 2004.
