Management burning of invasive native scrub: principles

Agriculture Primefact
Primefact Number: 852    Edition: First edition    Released/reviewed: Feb 2009

Encroachment of unpalatable invasive native scrub (INS) is a major problem facing landholders in the semi-arid rangelands of New South Wales.

This has been recognised by officers from various government departments and by landholders who in many cases have seen ‘open’ paddocks become unmanageable and ‘scrubby’ in 10 to 15 years.

Some of the topics covered in this Primefact include:

  • What is a management burn?
  • Why use fire
  • The objectives of management burning
  • What will burning achieve?
  • Effect of burning on native invasive scrub
  • How much fuel is required for a management burn?
  • Planning for management burning
