Alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides) is a highly invasive weed that grows both on land and in water.
Due to its ability to tolerate herbicides and spread easily by fragments, it is a serious weed of waterways, wetlands and floodplains in Australia.
Irrigated and floodplain-based farming is threatened by alligator weed and the worst infestations currently affect grazing lands in the Hunter region of NSW.
