What's new?
Shane Hetherington, NSW Department of Primary Industries Horticultural Plant Pathologist, describes the very topical issue of fireblight in this year’s feature article.
Australia has been very fortunate so far in avoiding this disease. The outbreak discovered at the Melbourne Botanic Gardens cost the country more than $20 million.
If this bacterial disease were to infest our production areas it would entail enormous costs. In the case of the Goulburn Valley it would cost in excess of $870 million.
This is good reason to be aware of the symptoms and to monitor regularly for this disease.
Shane discusses all aspects of fireblight including when to look, what to look for and the risks. Shane has attended many international fireblight working groups and has seen the disease first hand.
