Diamondback moth control in Asian leafy Brassica crops

Agriculture primefact cover
Primefact Number: 820    Edition: Fifth edition    Released/reviewed: Apr 2009

The Key Pest of brassica crops is Diamondback moth (Cabbage moth), Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus).

Feeding by the caterpillar stage of this insect can cause holes in leaves all over the plant making most of the leaves unmarketable.

Asian leafy brassica growers need to adopt the 'Two Window' strategy developed by Avcare Insecticide Resistance Action Committee in order to prevent the build up of resistance.

This Primefact covers the following topics:

  • Life history of the insect and damage caused
  • Preferred crop hosts and alternative weed hosts
  • Management of the pest
