Description

Field trials of mild onion cultivars for evaluation of bulb yield and quality to select varieties that are best suited to NSW growing areas for domestic and export market potential.

Activities & outcomes

Replicated and commercial variety trials conducted during 1997–2002 have identified suitable mild onion cultivars for the MIA and Lachlan Valley.

Currently conducting trials as a part of the HAL-funded national project on Mild Onion Industry Development.

Monitoring nitrate nutrition by sap testing.

Spacing trials.

Presentation to grower meetings, field days and workshops to encourage the adoption of improved cultivars by growers.

Publish cultivar trial results in industry publications.
