Animal Research Authority: Director-General's Animal Care and Ethics Committee

The Director-General's Animal Care and Ethics Committee (DG's ACEC) has been set up to supervise independent researchers who use animals.  Applications for animal research authorities and project approvals must be considered by the committee, which meets approximately once each seven weeks.

The Animal Research Act 1985 states that Animal Research Authorities must be renewed every twelve months. However, in some instances approval of the project may be granted for three years, so the second part of the application form (ie the project application) may only need to be completed every three years depending on the type of research.

For more information regarding regulation of animal research, policies and guidelines, visit the Animal Ethics Infolink site.
